The Times Tech Guild, which represents workers like software developers and data analysts at The New York Times , went on strike early Monday, just ahead of the busy Election Day news period.
The two sides negotiated until late Sunday. The sticking points in recent days were whether the workers could get a “just cause” provision in their contract, which means they can be terminated only for misconduct or another such reason; pay increases and pay equity; and return-to-office policies.
Times management said in an email to workers on Sunday that it had offered a 2.5 percent annual wage increase, a minimum 5 percent pay increase for promotions and a $1,000 ratification bonus. It also said the company would maintain its current in-office work requirements of two days a week through June, while allowing employees to work fully remotely for three weeks per year.
The guild said in a statement that its members would protest daily outside the company’s headquarters starting at 9 a.m. on Monday.
“They have left us no choice but to demonstrate the power of our labor on the picket line,” Kathy Zhang, the guild’s unit chair, said in the statement. “Nevertheless, we stand ready to bargain and get this contract across the finish line.”
The guild said it was asking readers to honor its digital picket line by not playing Times Games products, such as Wordle, and not using the Cooking app. It added that it had filed numerous unfair labor practice charges against The Times with the National Labor Relations Board over the company’s return-to-office mandates and its attempts to interrogate members about their intentions to strike.
Hannah Yang, the company’s chief growth and customer officer, and Jason Sobel, its chief technology officer, said in an email to the tech workers on Sunday night that management had “a strong offer on the table.”
“We are disappointed that the Tech Guild leadership is attempting to jeopardize our journalistic mission at this critical time,” they said in the email, a copy of which was obtained by The Times.
The Times Tech Guild, the country’s biggest union of tech workers with collective bargaining rights, was certified in a National Labor Relations Board election in March 2022. It has been negotiating for a contract since then.
The union voted on Sept. 10 to authorize the strike with the intention of walking off the job around Election Day, when a jump in readership is expected. The union’s more than 600 members maintain the back-end systems running The Times’s digital operation.
A Times spokeswoman said the company had “robust plans in place to ensure that we are able to fulfill our mission and serve our readers.”
Many New York Times workers are represented by other unions. Times reporters and some editors are part of the Times Guild, while a number of workers at Wirecutter, The Times’s product review website, are also unionized. Those unions, as well as the Times Tech Guild, are affiliated with the News Guild of New York.
Wirecutter Union workers went on a five-day walkout in 2021 over the prime Black Friday shopping weekend to pressure management to agree to a contract. Times reporters and editors held a 24-hour strike in December 2022 over contract negotiations.

When Miki Shiverick needs firewood to heat her home, or help clearing the rusted appliances and vehicles from her property, she doesn’t go to a store or pay for services. Instead, she trades for it.
For instance, preparing her land in Bergholz, Ohio, for livestock over the last four years required hauling away piles of salvage, old tools and antiques from the run-down property she bought from the family of an old tinker. The place, with its barn house and five outbuildings, resembled a 12-acre junkyard.
Ms. Shiverick, 56, found local scrappers willing to keep the profits from selling the rusted cars, campers, tractor parts, buried gas tanks and aluminum ingots at the local scrap yard. She also found woodsmen willing to clear trees for her in exchange for most of the wood.

Saudi Arabia and seven other oil-producing countries said on Sunday that they would postpone plans to gradually increase oil output until the end of December, according to a news release posted on the website of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
No reason was given for the delay, but it was expected by some analysts. Sunday’s move appears intended to avoid unsettling markets, particularly before the tight presidential election in the United States on Tuesday, which could create volatility.
On Monday, prices of Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 2.7 percent to $75 a barrel. Prices for U.S. crude also rose about 2 percent to above $71 a barrel.

The false claim
Social media users have falsely claimed that digital voting machines have been programmed to switch votes from Republicans to Democrats, or vice versa.
Why it’s false
The claim has been repeatedly debunked by election officials, voting machine companies, government agencies and by audits of election results. Though rumors and anecdotes have surfaced in several states since 2020, no evidence has emerged that a machine was programmed to flip any votes.

Groups backing former President Donald J. Trump recently sent messages to organize poll watchers to be ready to dispute votes in Democratic areas. Some posted images of armed men standing up for their rights to recruit for their cause. Others spread conspiracy theories that anything less than a Trump victory on Tuesday would be a miscarriage of justice worthy of revolt.
“The day is fast approaching when fence sitting will no longer be possible,” read one post from an Ohio chapter of the Proud Boys, the far-right organization that was instrumental in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. “You will either stand with the resistance or take a knee and willingly accept the yoke of tyranny and oppression.”

Medicare Advantage.
Part D
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage?

OPEC Plus had first announced in June that it would gradually increase production by an estimated 2.2 million barrels a day, or around 2 percent of global supplies, in October. That had been a major source of concern for the markets. Then, in September, the group announced a delay until at least December.
The group may also have decided not to increase production at this time because oil prices have recently drifted downward, as traders have judged that immediate geopolitical risks related to the Israel-Hamas war have eased.
In October, amid fears that conflict between Israel and Iran could lead to a disruption in oil supplies, prices for Brent crude, the international benchmark, briefly topped $80 a barrel. But they eased to about $73 a barrel on Friday, as the focus shifted back to issues like weak demand from China. Many analysts say that even $80 a barrel is a relatively low price considering the tensions in an important oil-producing region.
“With geopolitical concerns temporarily set aside, attention is once again shifting back to market fundamentals,” analysts at JP Morgan wrote in a recent note.
OPEC Plus includes Russia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Several of these countries want to produce more oil but have struggled to find the right time to begin loosening the taps.

The New York Times added roughly 260,000 paid digital subscribers in the third quarter of the year, the company said on Monday, crossing the threshold of 11 million total subscribers for the first time.
The company’s adjusted operating profit for the quarter, which ran from July through September, rose 16.1 percent to $104.2 million, from $89.8 million a year before. Overall revenue increased 7 percent to $640.2 million, compared with the same period in 2023.
The Times has a stated goal of reaching 15 million subscribers by the end of 2027. It had 11.09 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter, 10.47 million of which were to digital products only, not the print newspaper.
Early Monday before the earnings were released, the Times Tech Guild, which represents more than 600 of the company’s tech workers, went on strike . The union and the company are negotiating over pay increases and other issues.

Meredith Kopit Levien, the president and chief executive of The New York Times Company, said in a statement accompanying the earnings announcement that more than five million of the 11 million subscriptions were now either for multiple Times products, which include digital news, Cooking, Games, Wirecutter and The Athletic, or a bundle of all products offered.
“We believe that portfolio, and our ability to keep adding value to it over time, is what makes The Times resilient in a changing media landscape, and well positioned to become a larger, more profitable company,” Ms. Levien said in a statement.
Digital subscription revenue jumped 14.2 percent from a year earlier. Digital advertising revenue was also up, with an increase of 8.8 percent year-over-year.
Operating costs for the quarter included $4.6 million for the lawsuit The Times filed last year against Microsoft and OpenAI, contending that the companies unlawfully used copyrighted material to train their generative A.I. chatbots. Adjusted operating costs increased 5.4 percent from a year earlier to $536 million, from $508.6 million.
The Athletic, the sports news website that The Times bought in 2022 for $550 million, made a quarterly profit for the first time since the purchase. The Athletic’s adjusted operating profit for the third quarter rose to $2.6 million, from a loss of $7.9 million in the same period last year. The company said the increase came from higher subscription and advertising revenue.

Down to the wire
Investors on Monday appear to be unwinding bets on the so-called Trump trade. In a major reversal, bonds have rallied and the dollar and crypto currencies have dipped in the race’s final hours.
One explanation is a surprising new poll that showed Vice President Kamala Harris, powered in part by support from women and older voters, edging ahead in deep-red Iowa — a finding that’s also led to a tightening of Donald Trump’s lead in political prediction markets.

The Times Tech Guild, which represents workers like software developers and data analysts at The New York Times , went on strike early Monday, just ahead of the busy Election Day news period.
The two sides negotiated until late Sunday. The sticking points in recent days were over whether they could get a “just cause” provision in their contract, which means workers can be terminated only for misconduct or another such reason; pay increases and pay equity; and return-to-office policies.
Times management said in an email to workers on Sunday that it had offered a 2.5 percent annual wage increase, a minimum 5 percent pay increase for promotions and a $1,000 ratification bonus. It also said that the company would maintain its current in-office work requirements of two days a week through June 2025, while allowing employees to work fully remotely for three weeks per year.
